Tuesday Morning

Instructor Presentation:

Purpose of Telon – Productivity, Standardization, Ease-of-use.
Telon Components – Design Facility (TDF), Generator, Test Facility
TDF Components – Panel Image, Panel Definition, Screen Definition, Program Structure Charts
Review of first program

Lab:

Write and compile a complete Telon program (the update) from detailed instructions. This segment can also be done as a pre-class assignment by the students with least Telon experience. This will help them to follow the class at a speed which will not bore those who have been struggling with Telon.

Result: The students will have begun to learn how to navigate around the TDF, paint screens, map data between the screen and the database, add validation and reformatting rules, access the database, and interact with the transaction manager.

 

Tuesday Afternoon

Review, Q & A of Previous Session

Instructor Presentation: Telon Test Facility

Lab: Test the program written this morning, using the Test facility to simulate other programs not written yet, and to diagnose errors.

Result: The students will have begun to learn how to test a Telon program. For those new to the transaction manager, this will also teach that environment.

 

Wednesday Morning

Review, Q & A of previous session

Review compile listing of Update Program to tie new Telon concepts to existing COBOL knowledge.

Instructor Presentation:

Painting a Panel Image.
Level 1 Prototyping.
The menu program.
The display program.

Lab: Paint and test two screens without the kind of detailed intructions given on Tuesday morning.

Result: Students will now be competent to paint and test simple screens.

 

Wednesday Afternoon

Review, Q & A of previous session

Instructor Presentation:

Building a Panel Definition.
Level 2 Prototyping.
Further details of the display and menu programs.

Lab: Complete the user interface for the display and menu programs.

Results: Students will now be competent to build and test simple user interfaces.

 

Thursday Morning

Review, Q & A of previous session

Instructor Presentation:

Building a Screen Definition.
Telon Structure Charts.
Data Groups, Environment Sections, and Screen Parms.
Further Details of the display and menu programs.

Lab: Complete and test the display and menu programs.

Result: The students will now be competent to build and test simple Telon programs.

Friday Afternoon

Review, detailed discussion of compile listing of list program, demonstrating how each line of code is derived from activities in the TDF.

Control Indicator.
User I/O.
Considerations for more complex programs.

Lab: Include Add functionality in the Update program, and retest.

Result: Students are now fully competent to write any Telon program.
